Tear stains in cats may be due to congenital genes, improper diet, trichiasis irritation, nasolacrimal duct blockage, eye infections, etc. It is recommended that the owner take the cat to the pet hospital for examination and treatment in time to avoid aggravation of tear stains. In addition, in the usual feeding management, the owner also needs to pay attention to the cat’s daily nutritional balance and give the cat light food. At the same time, do not give the cat food with high salt content, and clean up the cat’s eye discharge in time.

1. Congenital genes caused

Some cats are naturally prone to tear stains, especially flat-faced cats, such as Garfield, Persian, Chinchilla, etc. These cats are born with short, distorted nasolacrimal ducts, and the tears secreted by the lacrimal sac cannot be discharged properly, so their eyes always look watery. If you don’t dry it off in time, it will form tear stains over time. In this regard, if the owner’s cat is Garfield, British short cat, Persian cat, Chinchilla and other flat-faced cats, then you need to use wet wipes to wipe off the tear stains on their faces every day, which can reduce the production of tear stains, and usually pay more attention to their respiratory health.

2. Caused by improper diet

If the cat’s diet is messy, or if the cat is fed food with high salt content for a long time, it is easy to cause the cat to have tear stains. In this regard, it is recommended that the owner change the cat’s diet, feed the cat light and easily digestible food, and regularly feed the cat some vegetables and fruits. At the same time, it is also necessary to supervise the cat to drink more water.

3. Trichiasis irritation causes

Cat eye trichiasis irritation can also cause cats to appear tear stains, because if the cat’s eyelashes grow upside down, they will pierce the inside of the cat’s eyeball, thereby stimulating the eyes, leaving tears, and over time will form tear stains. For the situation that the cat has trichiasis, if the owner wants to deal with it himself, he can use tweezers to pull out all the eyelashes, but if the cat is disobedient, the tweezers are likely to hurt the cat’s eyes, and the owner may also be scratched or bitten by the cat, so it is not recommended that the owner deal with it by himself, and should go to the pet hospital for surgical treatment in time.

4. Caused by nasolacrimal duct blockage

Cat’s tears usually enter the nasal cavity with the tear ducts, and when the nasolacrimal ducts are blocked, the tears will collect on the eyes and overflow, which will lead to very serious tear stains over time, and generally need to be treated by nasolacrimal duct dredging.

5. Caused by eye infection

If a cat’s eyes are infected by bacteria, they may develop eye diseases such as conjunctivitis or keratitis, which can cause the cat’s eyes to secrete a large amount of sticky secretions and form tear stains. At the same time, it will be accompanied by symptoms such as tearing, redness, redness and swelling. If this is the case, it is necessary to clean the cat’s eyes, wipe the secretions of the cat’s eyes with normal saline in time, and treat the cat with eye drops containing lysozyme.
